Root Cause Thinking
Manufacturing Excellence
॥ ORIGINAL SANSKRIT SHLOKA ॥
Arthashastra 5.3

मूलं छित्त्वा शाखां न छिन्द्यात्।
मूलनाशे शाखाः स्वयमेव नश्यन्ति॥

Transliteration (IAST)
Mūlaṃ chittvā śākhāṃ na chindyāt.
Mūlanāśe śākhāḥ svayameva naśyanti.

English Meaning & Translation
Do not cut the branches; cut the root.
When the root is destroyed, branches perish by themselves.
The physician who treats only the symptom gives temporary relief. The one who finds the root gives lasting cure.
💼 Business Lesson
The failure to address root causes is one of the most expensive management habits in manufacturing. Until the underlying process cause is found, analysed, and corrected, no amount of expediting and apologising will break the cycle.
👑 Leader Lesson
Three root cause analysis failures are most common: stopping at the first obvious cause (symptom treatment), assigning cause to operator error without investigating why (system failure masked), and implementing corrections without verifying effectiveness.
⚙ Manufacturing Lesson
For every significant quality failure, require a formal root cause analysis using 5-Why, Ishikawa, or fault tree analysis. The output must be the ACTUAL cause — verified — and a corrective action that permanently prevents recurrence.
📜 APPLICATION TO MODERN INDUSTRY

Chanakya's approach to problem-solving was fundamentally diagnostic. Understanding the true cause before prescribing a solution was fundamental — because treating symptoms while leaving root causes intact guarantees the problem will return.

✔ ACTION CHECKLIST
Implement standard root cause analysis methodology across all production areas
Require documented root cause analysis for every customer return and significant rejection
Establish a corrective action effectiveness verification step before closing records
Train all quality and production supervisors in root cause analysis techniques
Build a knowledge base of solved root causes — reference for future failures
❓ REFLECTION QUESTIONS
❓ What are your three most frequent quality failure modes — and have the true root causes been found and corrected?
❓ What percentage of your corrective actions are followed up to verify effectiveness?
"The organisation that finds the root of every problem plants the seeds of permanent improvement. Each verified root cause correction is a defect that never returns."
Find the Root. Fix It Forever.
