Customer & Market Leadership
॥ ORIGINAL SANSKRIT SHLOKA ॥
Arthashastra 3.15

मूल्यं वस्तुनो गुणेन निश्चीयते।
न केवलं कर्मभिः, किन्तु मूल्येन॥

Transliteration (IAST)
Mūlyaṃ vastuno guṇena niścīyate.
Na kevalaṃ karmabhiḥ, kintu mūlyena.

English Meaning & Translation
The price of a thing is determined by its quality.
Not by labour alone, but by its true worth.
The merchant who prices only to the commodity misses the premium the customer gladly pays for certainty.
💼 Business Lesson
Pricing strategy in industrial manufacturing must be based on three inputs: cost (the floor), value delivered (the ceiling), and competitive positioning (the market context). The manufacturer who prices only from cost leaves money on the table. The one who prices from value commands the margin their quality deserves.
👑 Leader Lesson
Value-based pricing requires the ability to articulate and quantify the value your product delivers to the customer — in their application, in their terms. What is the value of zero defects to a heat exchanger fabricator who must meet a project deadline? That value, not your material cost, is the pricing anchor.
⚙ Manufacturing Lesson
Build your pricing architecture to reflect your product and service quality levels: a premium tier for certified, highest-quality, fastest-delivery products; a standard tier for routine applications; and a competitive tier for price-sensitive volume. Not all customers need — or will pay for — your highest quality level.
📜 APPLICATION TO MODERN INDUSTRY

Chanakya understood the distinction between price (what a transaction costs) and value (what a transaction is worth). The commercial strategy that builds durable prosperity delivers genuine value consistently — and prices accordingly.

❓ REFLECTION QUESTIONS
❓ What evidence do you have that your current pricing captures the full value you deliver to your customers?
❓ Where are you underpricing because you have not quantified and communicated your true value?
"The price your customer pays reflects the value you have been able to demonstrate. Build the evidence, build the conversation, build the premium."
Price the Value. Capture What You Deserve.
