असज्जं शस्त्रं युद्धे किं करोति॥

Transliteration (IAST)
Śastraṃ sajjaṃ sadā tiṣṭhet.
Asajjaṃ śastraṃ yuddhe kiṃ karoti.

English Meaning & Translation
The weapon should always be kept ready.
An unready weapon — what can it do in battle?
An army that depends on weapons that may fail is an army already defeated in battle.
💼 Business Lesson
Equipment reliability — the confidence that every machine will perform as required when required — is a foundational manufacturing capability. OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) measures this confidence quantitatively and points to where investment yields the greatest return.
👑 Leader Lesson
The most expensive maintenance strategy is reactive maintenance — fixing equipment after it fails. The second most expensive is time-based preventive maintenance applied without data. Predictive maintenance — based on condition monitoring — is consistently the highest-return approach.
⚙ Manufacturing Lesson
Calculate the true cost of unplanned downtime: lost production output, quality risk from process interruption, expediting cost, customer goodwill damage, and overtime to recover. This cost, annualised, almost always justifies significant investment in preventive and predictive maintenance capability.
📜 APPLICATION TO MODERN INDUSTRY

Chanakya was meticulous about the maintenance and readiness of military equipment. An army whose weapons failed at the critical moment had not been defeated by the enemy — it had been defeated by its own negligence.

✔ ACTION CHECKLIST
Implement OEE tracking for all critical equipment with monthly reporting
Build a formal preventive maintenance schedule for all production equipment
Invest in condition monitoring capability for your highest-criticality machines
Track and trend the time between failures for all critical equipment
Calculate and publish the annual cost of unplanned downtime to create investment justification
❓ REFLECTION QUESTIONS
❓ What is your current OEE score — and how does it compare to world-class benchmarks in your product category?
❓ What was the total production loss from unplanned equipment downtime in the last 12 months?
