Customer & Market Leadership
॥ ORIGINAL SANSKRIT SHLOKA ॥
Arthashastra 7.2

परस्परहितं मैत्रम्।
यत्र परस्परहितम्, तत्र मैत्री चिरं तिष्ठति॥

Transliteration (IAST)
Parasparahitaṃ maitram.
Yatra parasparahitam, tatra maitrī ciraṃ tiṣṭhati.

English Meaning & Translation
Friendship is mutual benefit.
Where there is mutual benefit, friendship long endures.
The alliance built on mutual benefit endures. The one built on convenience dissolves at the first inconvenience.
💼 Business Lesson
Long-term customer partnerships in manufacturing are the highest-value commercial assets available. A customer who has invested in approving your quality system, qualifying your products, and integrating your supply into their engineering standards is not a customer who easily moves to a competitor.
👑 Leader Lesson
Build long-term partnerships through: joint planning (share demand forecasts and capacity plans), senior engagement (regular direct contact between senior leaders), transparency (communicate honestly about performance, challenges, and improvements), joint improvement (collaborative quality and cost improvement initiatives), and commitment signals (capital investments that visibly align your capability to the customer's long-term needs).
⚙ Manufacturing Lesson
The commercial value of a long-term partnership extends far beyond direct revenue. Long-term partners provide advance demand intelligence, reduce sales cost, refer new customers, co-develop products, and provide volume stability that enables production planning efficiency.
📜 APPLICATION TO MODERN INDUSTRY

Chanakya classified commercial and diplomatic relationships by their durability. Genuine mutual interest was most stable; temporary advantage was inherently fragile. Invest disproportionately in the former.
