Arthashastra 3.9

मूल्यं नास्ति, मूल्यं नास्ति।
गुणं ददाति यः सः मूल्यवान्॥

Mūlyaṃ nāsti, mūlyaṃ nāsti.
Guṇaṃ dadāti yaḥ saḥ mūlyavān.

English Meaning & Translation
Price is not everything; price is not everything.
One who gives quality is truly valuable.
The merchant who sells the most expensive goods wins only once. The one who delivers the greatest value wins the customer's heart — and trades for a lifetime.
💼 Business Lesson
Value creation in industrial manufacturing means delivering outcomes that matter to the customer: zero-defect quality in critical applications, short lead times in fast-moving projects, complete documentation for regulated industries, technical support for new application development. Measure and communicate each.
👑 Leader Lesson
Build a structured value proposition for each key customer segment. Answer: what are the three most important things this segment values from their seamless tube supplier beyond price? Then build specific evidence that you deliver those three things better than any competitor.
⚙ Manufacturing Lesson
Expand your definition of value creation beyond the product. Application engineering support, quality documentation packages, accelerated delivery capability, and custom specification flexibility are all value elements that differentiate a manufacturer in a price-competitive market.
📜 APPLICATION TO MODERN INDUSTRY

Chanakya's framework distinguished clearly between price and value. The commercial strategy that built durable prosperity was not the one that extracted the highest price, but the one that consistently delivered genuine value.
