॥ ORIGINAL SANSKRIT SHLOKA ॥
Arthashastra 1.4

यः लब्धं रक्षति, सः नित्यं सम्पन्नः।
रक्षाहीनः नित्यम् अल्पः॥

Transliteration (IAST)
Yaḥ labdhaṃ rakṣati, saḥ nityaṃ sampannaḥ.
Rakṣāhīnaḥ nityam alpaḥ.

English Meaning & Translation
One who protects what is gained is always prosperous.
One without protection is always deficient.
The king who wins new subjects through conquest but cannot retain the ones he has will never rule a stable kingdom.
💼 Business Lesson
Customer retention in manufacturing is the most cost-effective revenue strategy available. Acquiring a new industrial customer typically costs five to ten times more than retaining an existing one. The revenue from retained customers is also typically more predictable, higher margin, and less competitive than newly acquired revenue.
👑 Leader Lesson
The leader who tracks customer retention as carefully as new business development has understood the arithmetic of long-term commercial value. The one who focuses only on new acquisition while existing customers drift away is running a bath with the drain open.
⚙ Manufacturing Lesson
Build your customer retention programme on five pillars: Quality consistency (zero surprises on product quality), Delivery reliability (commitments met consistently), Proactive communication (inform before being asked), Account management (regular senior engagement with key accounts), and Continuous value creation (bringing new ideas, solutions, and capabilities that the customer values over time).
📜 APPLICATION TO MODERN INDUSTRY

Chanakya understood that retention — keeping what you have — was consistently more economical than acquisition — gaining new. A kingdom that invested in the prosperity and loyalty of its existing subjects required less conquest.
