♟ PART I · PRINCIPLE 20 OF 100
Integrity & Ethics
Foundations of Strategic Thinking
॥ ORIGINAL SANSKRIT SHLOKA ॥
Arthashastra 3.1

धर्मः एव हतो हन्ति, धर्मो रक्षति रक्षितः।
तस्माद् धर्मः न हातव्यः॥

Transliteration (IAST)
Dharmaḥ eva hato hanti, dharmo rakṣati rakṣitaḥ.
Tasmād dharmaḥ na hātavyaḥ.

English Meaning & Translation
Righteousness when destroyed destroys; righteousness when protected, protects.
Therefore righteousness must never be abandoned.
The king who rules by force rules while he is feared. The king who rules by righteousness rules while he is respected. Only one of these lasts.
💼 Business Lesson
Ethical business conduct — honest pricing, accurate quality documentation, genuine compliance with specifications — is not merely a legal obligation. It is a long-term commercial strategy. The customer who discovers dishonesty does not merely leave; they warn others.
👑 Leader Lesson
The leader who compromises on integrity once creates permission structures for everyone below them to do the same. Ethical standards must be absolute and visibly held. A single public exception destroys a thousand private commitments.
⚙ Manufacturing Lesson
In manufacturing, integrity applies to test certificates, material traceability, dimensional reporting, and heat treatment records. False documentation in industrial supply chains has destroyed companies and endangered lives. Zero tolerance is the only standard.
📜 APPLICATION TO MODERN INDUSTRY

Chanakya's framework of dharma — righteous conduct — was not merely moral prescription. It was a strategic argument: organisations built on integrity attract better people, better partners, and more loyal customers than those built on expedience.
