॥ ORIGINAL SANSKRIT SHLOKA ॥
Chanakya Niti 4.18

काकः कृष्णः पिकः कृष्णः, को भेदः पिककाकयोः।
वसन्तकाले सम्प्राप्ते, काकः काकः पिकः पिकः॥

Transliteration (IAST)
Kākaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ pikaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ, ko bhedaḥ pikakākayoḥ.
Vasantakāle samprāpte, kākaḥ kākaḥ pikaḥ pikaḥ.

English Meaning & Translation
The crow is black; the cuckoo is black — what is the difference?
When spring arrives, the crow is a crow and the cuckoo is a cuckoo.
(True quality is revealed in its proper season.)
Action at the wrong moment is as costly as no action at all. The wise leader moves when conditions align.
💼 Business Lesson
Before any major commitment, verify five conditions: market readiness, internal capability, competitive environment, financial position, and people in place. If two or more are significantly misaligned, prepare until they converge.
👑 Leader Lesson
The leader who acts before conditions are ready wastes resources on premature execution. The leader who waits too long after conditions align loses the competitive window. Judgment between these two traps is the rarest leadership skill.
⚙ Manufacturing Lesson
Launching a capacity expansion at the peak of a demand cycle, or entering a new product segment before the quality system can support it, are timing failures that have destroyed value in well-managed manufacturers.
📜 APPLICATION TO MODERN INDUSTRY

Chanakya devoted significant attention to the assessment of the right moment. The same decision made at different times produces dramatically different outcomes.

✔ ACTION CHECKLIST
Develop a market timing assessment checklist for major decisions
Monitor leading indicators: order books, import data, capacity utilisation
Build internal readiness reviews into project approval
Maintain strategic optionality — avoid commitments that foreclose future choices
Create rapid-response protocols for time-sensitive opportunities
❓ REFLECTION QUESTIONS
❓ What major decisions have you made recently where timing was a significant factor?
❓ What preparation would allow you to move decisively when the next opportunity arises?
"The moment of perfect alignment between readiness and opportunity is rare. The prepared organisation will recognise it."
Prepare Fully. Move Precisely. Win Decisively.
