Managing Change
Leadership & Management
॥ ORIGINAL SANSKRIT SHLOKA ॥
Arthashastra 1.19

जनस्य मनः जित्वा कार्यं सिद्ध्यति।
न बलेन न दण्डेन, किंतु विश्वासेन॥

Transliteration (IAST)
Janasya manaḥ jitvā kāryaṃ siddhyati.
Na balena na daṇḍena, kintu viśvāsena.

English Meaning & Translation
Having won the minds of the people, tasks succeed.
Not through force, not through punishment, but through trust.
Change imposed upon those who are not prepared breeds resistance. Change co-created with those who must live it breeds commitment.
💼 Business Lesson
Change management is not about overcoming resistance — it is about building genuine commitment. People resist change they don't understand, don't believe in, or weren't involved in designing. Address all three, and resistance dissolves.
👑 Leader Lesson
The leader who communicates only the WHAT of change without the WHY generates compliance at best. The one who explains WHY this change is necessary, what it will deliver, and what support will be provided generates commitment — the discretionary effort that makes change succeed.
⚙ Manufacturing Lesson
Manufacturing change — new processes, new technology, new quality requirements — fails most often not because the technology was wrong but because the people who must operate it were not brought into the change before it was imposed.
📜 APPLICATION TO MODERN INDUSTRY

Chanakya managed social and political change with extraordinary strategic intelligence — never forcing change faster than the readiness of his constituency to absorb it, always building coalitions of support before acting.

✔ ACTION CHECKLIST
