Leadership & Management
॥ ORIGINAL SANSKRIT SHLOKA ॥
Arthashastra 5.4

हिते च नियुक्ताः ये, ते आलोचयन्ति।
आत्महितं वदन्ति ये, ते शत्रवः॥

Transliteration (IAST)
Hite ca niyuktāḥ ye, te ālocayanti.
Ātmahitaṃ vadanti ye, te śatravaḥ.

English Meaning & Translation
Those engaged in your welfare speak honestly.
Those who speak only their own interest are enemies.
The king who cannot hear criticism cannot correct himself. He is governed by his blind spots.
💼 Business Lesson
Build structural mechanisms that ensure honest feedback reaches every level of leadership: anonymous surveys, skip-level meetings, customer advisory boards, post-project reviews, and external advisory conversations that are unfiltered by politeness.
👑 Leader Lesson
The leader who creates a genuine feedback culture receives early warning of problems that would otherwise become crises. The one who punishes bearers of bad news receives only good news — until the bad news becomes a catastrophe.
⚙ Manufacturing Lesson
In manufacturing, the quality system IS a feedback system. NCRs, customer complaints, in-process rejections, equipment alarms — these are feedback. The organisation that treats every feedback signal as valuable information, not as blame, continuously improves.
📜 APPLICATION TO MODERN INDUSTRY

Chanakya designed elaborate mechanisms for ensuring that accurate information — including uncomfortable truths — reached the ruler. He understood that power insulates leaders from the honest feedback they most need.

✔ ACTION CHECKLIST
