Conflict Management
Leadership & Management
॥ ORIGINAL SANSKRIT SHLOKA ॥
Arthashastra 7.3

कलहः शत्रुणा तुल्यः, संधिः सखा मतः।
मध्यस्थः सर्वतः श्रेयान्॥

Transliteration (IAST)
Kalahaḥ śatruṇā tulyaḥ, saṃdhiḥ sakhā mataḥ.
Madhyasthaḥ sarvataḥ śreyān.

English Meaning & Translation
Conflict is equal to an enemy; reconciliation is considered a friend.
The mediator is best of all.
Conflict avoided does not disappear — it compounds. Address it early, with fairness, and it becomes the foundation of stronger alliances.
💼 Business Lesson
Build a conflict management architecture at three levels: individual-to-individual (escalation pathways, mediation access), cross-functional (resolution forums, clear decision rights), and strategic (deliberate leadership debate, explicit decision authority).
👑 Leader Lesson
The leadership behaviour that most shapes conflict culture is how the leader handles disagreement in their own team meetings. A leader who welcomes robust debate and makes clear decisions builds a team that handles conflict productively at every level.
⚙ Manufacturing Lesson
In manufacturing, structural tensions — production vs quality, sales vs operations, cost vs investment — are not personal failures. They are the natural friction of functions with different mandates. Build resolution systems, not conflict avoidance.
📜 APPLICATION TO MODERN INDUSTRY

Chanakya treated conflict as inevitable in any complex organisation, not as a failure of management. His counsel was to manage it with speed, fairness, and structural intelligence.

✔ ACTION CHECKLIST
Create a clear conflict resolution process and communicate it to all leaders
Train supervisors in structured conflict conversation techniques
Establish cross-functional conflict escalation protocols with defined resolution timelines
Model constructive conflict in leadership team meetings
Address unresolved conflicts directly — never allow them to persist beyond 30 days
❓ REFLECTION QUESTIONS
❓ Where in your organisation is conflict being avoided rather than addressed?
❓ How do you currently handle conflict between production, quality, sales, and finance?
"The organisation that addresses conflict with speed, fairness, and clarity emerges from each resolution stronger than it entered."
Address Early. Resolve Fairly. Emerge Stronger.
